Musings Archive: September 2004:: New Cancer Journal Posted :: Not what we expected.
Not what we were preparing for.
But at least it's sorta kinda charted territory. Which is why I'm scared out of my mind. more Posted by Dwight Ozard (9/27/2004 6:22:42 PM | link)
:: Prophets in their Own Country :: Buddy Miller's latest disc--a gospel song cycle called Universal, United House of Prayer is, after a brief, superficial listening, a spectacular nod back to the Gospel music ancestories of Americana. Don't be fooled. A closer listen suggests anything but a polite turn to religion; this is faith at its best and most deadly, a killer anti-war record that comes just in time. Pierce Pettis writes songs of piercing senstivity and great wisdom. This time around, on Great Big World he delivers a disc that lifts and moves at every turn, all while keeping the arrangements exquisitely subtle, forcing the listener to actually pay attention. Will we have the guts to really, really do so?

:: The Village Voice finds Buddy Miller's Jesus :: And Buddy's Jesus doesn't dig George Bush. Sure, this piece is a bit of a sophomoric mess, but at least it finally understands that you can be a believer and not march jack-booted to the beat of the neo-cons suggesting that we believers not only stop turning the other cheek, but start striking back as soon as we think that somebody might want to strike us first. Besides, I told you in my review that this wasn't a "praise Jesus" disc--but rather a "Lord help us" disc, and anti-war to boot. more Posted by Dwight Ozard (9/15/2004 11:55:36 AM | link)
:: RAY, the movie, shines :: It verges on Hagiography, but for good reason. Fortunately, Jamie Foxx rises to the greatness of the subject he portrays. more Posted by Dwight Ozard (9/14/2004 10:53:23 AM | link)
:: New News and it's 27. You figure it out. :: I wish I could tell you that this will link you to a long, meandering Cancer Journal "Update" that eventually takes a positive turn. It doesn't. Instead, this will link you to a long, meandering Cancer Journal "Update" that eventually takes a not so great turn. In fact, the meandering may be a function of classic Freudian avoidance. Oh, and 27 is now my least favorite number. Don't say I didn't warn you.
